Whenever a writer asks me to offer one piece of advice, I always say, “Go to writers conferences—more than one a year—if you can. “ Yes, it’s an investment but it’s an investment in your career. A writers conference is one of the only places in the world where you can meet editors and publishers face-to-face and pitch your work. Plus, you’re able to attend classes taught by the best of the best in the industry and network with other writers and speakers around the country. Some of my very best friendships have been made at writers conferences—friendships that continue year after year, book after book, deadline after deadline, conference after conference. I treasure those amazing friends, and I look forward to seeing them at every conference. Also, my publishing career changed for the better at my very first Christian Writers Conference. I sold two picture books at that conference and won several awards for my writing. (Yes, there are writing contests you can enter at most conferences, so you should!)
Lastly, there are conferences for every genre in every state and every country. To find out more about the various conferences, you can read about them in the Writers Market Guides (you’ll see those on my Writers Resource Sheet) and on http://writing.shawguides.com/ online. Hope to see you at a future conference!
