Life is busy.

I get it, but here’s the thing. If we don’t make time for God and His Word, we’ll never walk in all that He has for us. We’ll never accomplish all that He has for us to do. Bottom line, we’ll never have platinum faith if we don’t spend time in His Word and at His feet.

Remember when you first fell in love with your significant other? Every minute apart seemed like an eternity! You couldn’t wait until the next time you could be together. You thought about him all the time. You talked about him all the time. Everything reminded you of him. Just hearing his name made you smile. Well, that’s how we should feel about Jesus! After all, He is our first love yet it’s easy to lose sight of that fact in the busyness of everyday life.

So how do you fall back in love with Jesus? Spend time in His presence. The more time you spend with Jesus, the more time you’ll want to spend with Him. Having your devotional/prayer time shouldn’t feel like an obligation, but I know sometimes it can become just another item on our “to do” list that we check off after completing the task. I find that getting a good devotional book helps me stay committed to reading God’s Word and meditating on His promises. Trust me, a good devotional can make all the difference.

My friend and fellow author Suzanne Hadley Gosselin learned that both of my daughters were expecting babies last year, and she was thoughtful enough to send them her new devotional just for moms called, Grit and Grace: Devotions for Warrior Moms. My oldest daughter, Abby, told me later that she really loved the devotional, adding: “Her writing ministers to me right where I’m at—in the middle of raising two little ones. I look forward to it every morning.”

So, find a devotional that speaks to you and you’ll start looking forward to your private time with God, too!

And, here’s the best part. The God of this Universe, the Great I Am, the King of Kings, is looking forward to spending time with you! He can’t wait to reveal things to you in His Word. He adores you, and He has been waiting for you…

How awesome is that?! So, take time to study the Bible today. Don’t feel like you have to read four chapters every morning. Don’t let guilt and condemnation overtake you because you only read three verses yesterday. Sometimes, you may only want to read a few verses and mediate on that short passage of scripture. Other days, you may read several chapters in one sitting. There’s no right or wrong way to get into His Word. You might even want to make the most of your commute time and listen to an audio version of the Bible. And, while you’re at it, listen to some powerful Christian books on audio like my buddy Latan Murphy’s book, Courageous Women of the Bible: Leaving Behind Fear and Insecurity for a Life of Confidence and Freedom or my amazing friend Jennifer Watson’s book, Freedom! The Gutsy Pursuit of Breakthrough and the Life Beyond It, or find other faith-filled audio books by some of your favorite authors.
